The Fandom sees a group of teens at Comic Con ending up in a Hunger Games and Divergent-like world based on a fictional story in which the people are divided by classes named Gems (genetically modified people who are beautiful, stronger and more intelligent) and Imps (flawed humans treated as slaves... or worse).

The world is that from the popular fantasy movie The Gallows Dance and the characters have to follow in the footsteps of their heroes, ensuring the story follows its written progression to be able to return back home. But with one of the friends ending up with the Gems and the others in the harrowing world of the Imps – facing abuse and even death – the story goes off track, and they might never find their way back...

The Fandom combines the popularity of fantasy dystopian reads such as The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones with the geekiness of fandom, and especially fan fiction. There were lots of awesome references to popular franchises within this book, while creating its own multi-layered and eerily believable world.

Even though The Gallows Dance is a whole fictional creation (within another fictional creation, meta much?!), the depth to the world was incredible, and I was as much in awe with it while exploring as the characters were. Speaking of the characters, I loved the different relationships between them; there were siblings and friends and along the way their relationships were tested considerably, adding an emotional depth to a mostly action-packed read.

There were a few occasions where the story went a tad too far to depict the horrors of the fantasy world it was set in IMHO, but interspersed with the gripping mystery of how the teens ended up there and if they could ever return home as well as the tests to their friendships it was okay. Besides, I quickly skipped past these sections to satisfy my curiosity – and its eventual explanation was a good 'un (so, so original and cool!)

I also loved, loved, loved that fandoms and fan fiction was so integral to the story. Fan fiction is something which until not that many years ago was perceived as a bit strange but with an excellent novel like this taking it on board and creating a very cool story around it it's becoming normal and I love that.

The Fandom takes the best elements from contemporary quirky and geeky reads, and combines it with a truly epic fantasy spectacle to create a wholly original and highly addictive page-turner. More please!

The Fandom Anna Day 9781910655672 Books Reviews

Are you part of a fandom? Do you ever wish that you could meet the fictional characters from the stories you read in real life? Well for Violet, Katie (Violet’s friend), Alice (Violet’s best friend), and Nate (Violet’s younger brother), their very wish came true, except not in the way they expected. Violet and her friends have been fans of the book “The Gallows Dance” ever since it came out. One day at a Comic-Con event, all four of them are sucked into the world of “The Gallows Dance” by a freak accident. To make things worse, upon their arrival they cause the death of the heroine. Now, the foursome can’t leave this universe until they complete the story in place of “Rose”, the main character, but it won’t be easy. Join Violet and the rest of the foursome as they rewrite the story and fight for survival in this twisted world.

This book has an interesting concept and I truly enjoyed reading this book. One piece of advice expect the unexpected. I absolutely loved the plot twists on every page and I never knew how the author would catch me off guard! The author did an amazing job incorporating humor and a love story into this exciting read! However, this book discusses some mature content that younger readers could find disturbing. In my personal opinion, I found these mature scenes unnecessary because they did nothing to develop the plot. The author could have achieved the same outcome by using less “intense” scenarios. I also found the ending of the book very unsatisfying and it left me feeling as if the plot ended abruptly with no resolution.

{My thoughts} – Violet and her friends end up being transported into their favorite book/movie The Gallows Dance. However, this version of Canon that they have been transfered into isn’t one that they remember from the book/movie. It is different in many different ways and they aren’t sure what is what to be exact. There are some parts that remain the same and others that seem to change as much as the scenes.

Violet is trying her best to stick to the original story and is learning that sometimes things may change, but mostly it falls back into place. The threads from the Canon book/movie and the threads from the Canon they are now living in are trying to stay closely knit together in most cases.

Her and her friends are learning that when things alter off course, things can change a lot. Sometimes it changes for the better and sometimes it changes for the worse. You’d have to read the book to see what I mean by that.

I was rather impressed with this book, because it was like I was reading three or four different stories combined into one and they blended flawlessly with one another. The author did a brilliant job pulling everything together and left room for a possible sequel to be written as well, although I am not sure exactly how she’d transport them back into Canon – but thinking about all the different ways a reader could be transported into Narnia, I am sure there is a way!

I think that anyone that enjoys dystopian books will enjoy this one. It is slow to begin, but it does pick up and it becomes nearly impossible to put the book down. I really enjoyed reading it and I am sure that others with similar interest will as well. I mean who wouldn’t want to see what it could be like to be transported into a your favorite book/movie and live there for awhile? It was a rather interesting take on how that could happen and what would happen if it did happen.
