The Edge of Everything Jeff Giles Books

I could not put this book down. When I started it, I was expecting a murder mystery, not expecting to meet a supernatural entity. The book was completely engrossing, and the smallest details turned out to be foreshadows by the end. An entire world (or underworld) opened up as the pages turned. Zoe, her brother, Jonah and their mom become caught up in something much larger than the state of Montana where the book is set. I cannot praise this story too highly. It would make an incredible movie!

The Edge of Everything Jeff Giles Books Reviews

Quick moving, great character development. Leaves the reader pondering good vs. evil.... it seemed like a teenage novel. Well written and adventurous.
This book blew me away!!!
My wife read this book gives it 4 stars.
The only thing I can say about this book is that there better be a sequel. Oh and the characters are amazingly awesome
pooled ink Reviews

I began reading this book with no expectations or ideas and yet it quickly consumed me. I quickly became utterly intrigued and could only hope that it wouldn’t dissipate into disappointment. It didn’t. Somehow this has become one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year.
I honestly have no words to accurately describe why I love this book, I just…do.
Just…something about the overall feel of this book embraced me. My eyes remained trained on the page and even when they weren’t my brain whirred with the story. It was weird, fascinating, hopeful, dismal, dramatic, stubborn, impossible, familiar, addicting, unfair…

Full of grief and love, of sin and mercy, THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING tears apart the wall between worlds and unfurls a most remarkable love story.

Man this year is not a good year for me. This book was so hyped up. I kept seeing it everywhere and so I was like, sure man let's dig into this.

I was so disappointed.

The Romance Aspect

This book is supposed to be a harrowing tale about love and sacrifice and I just... couldn't dig it. Since the book relied heavily on the romance I was really disappointed to find that the romance was instant. That love at first sight kind of deal. I, for one, am a fan of the slow burning romance. The romance that's got the tension, the banter, the suddenly intimate situations that make the reader yell "JUST KISS ALREADY!". That's the kind of romance I like. It needs to feel earned. It needs to feel real. This romance felt like I had to believe it, but there was so little chemistry. A lot of the romantic aspect was told rather than shown.

I mean, Zoe is enamored by X's physique which is understandable but that in the span of, what, twelve hours it turns into this burning, passionate love and I just. I don't get it, man. You barely know the guy.

For instance, when they kissed, it didn't feel earned any of the times it came up. It felt like I just had to accept it because plot.

The Characters

I have to admit there were things that I liked a lot about both Zoe and X's character. I found Zoe to be a bit endearing in the way she acted and blurted out random things in certain situations.

The one thing I really didn't like, though, was how Zoe treated her brother. She mentions early on that her brother had ADD or ADHD, but is really mean to him. A lot of the stuff she does she says she does out of "tough love". For instance there's a moment where her brother Jonah wouldn't leave the house. He refused to do anything that would lead him to leave the house. Zoe mentions that she did this when their dad first died and instead of consoling him and letting him cope in his own way about the situation what does she do? She tricks him into going outside. Granted she feels terrible about it afterwards, but it never seems to me that she fully understands what she's done. Jonah is adorable and I really liked him, but I really didn't like the way Zoe treated him.

X in general was a pretty bland character. He was the typical noble and righteous archetype and... that was kind of it. He instantly fell in love with Zoe for who knows why and then spends the rest of the story doing things so that they can be together forever and what not. How exciting.

In Conclusion...

This novel didn't really do anything for me. I spent most of my time skimming through the pages and finishing the book quicker because of it. The only part I really liked was when one of the side characters was insulting another one. It was funny and I took a delight to it. Otherwise I felt like a lot of the storyline was really predictable, the romance wasn't fleshed out, and the characters were pretty flat. I think if this book was a lot longer and we had a longer time to be with these characters I would be more into it, but it was pretty short for the kind of story it was and I didn't really enjoy that because things felt incredibly rushed.
I like to start off by saying that I enjoyed it the ride. It's hard to describe how I feel about it, So typical but also new at the same time i'm not sure if that makes sense. But I must certainly like the book.
