I often get caught in such a loop of romance novels I forget how much enjoy a true psychological thriller. The Elizas was quite the mind*radio edit*, and I’m still not sure what was real, what was fiction (within fiction), and what was completely imagined. I’m certain this is one book I will be thinking about for some time.

The Elizas is a standalone novel. This is a psychological thriller with minimal romance, for those of you who are used to me reviewing romances. The Elizas is written in two different styles, Eliza’a narration is in first-person perspective, and her novel, The Dots, is written in third-person limited perspective.

I loved how this novel was delivered, the book within a book format, and reading the book Eliza is about to have published as we are getting her story. The play back and forth between Eliza and Dot was fascinating. Sarah Shepard did a sublime job of building up two different plots in order to tell the incredibly riveting story of a fickle girl.

The story within a story aspect of this book was ingenious. I found myself completely caught up in both stories so much; it eventually became difficult – for Eliza and me – to delineate where she stopped, and Dot started. Between the fluidity between Dot and Eliza, Dot’s aunt Dorothy and Stella, and the shadowy figure Eliza continually glimpses, the security of self and the identity of those we think we know was constantly changing and in question. It was enthralling.

By the time I finished the novel, there wasn’t a single person I hadn’t questioned the intentions of. The characters, no matter the time they spent on the page, were highly developed and unique. It seemed as if each and every one of them was hiding things. From Eliza, from each other, from the reader. Such is the intention of an unreliable narrator, and Ms. Shepard gave us a great one in Eliza.

Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars series fascinated me, and I was ecstatic to get the chance to check out her foray into adult fiction. She delivered a multi-faceted and engaging story, full of fascinating characters with dubious intentions. I was wholly invested in figuring out the intricacies of Eliza’s world and was left reeling by the time the novel finished. Ms. Shepard is truly a fantastic author with an incredible knack for weaving a quirky, intense, psychological thriller.

This book was great! Sara Shepard is one of my favorite authors every book she writes is amazing!
although this book is somewhat predictable, it is a very interesting story line written in a manner that is unique. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was a quick easy read- great cold rainy day read.
If you are a fan of Pretty Little Liars then I can guarantee this novel will not disappoint! I am always impressed with Sara Shepard's novels. They are amazing and capture your attention until the very end.
This story was so boring and lame, I’m mad that I bothered to pay for this. The main character is completely unlikable, so why should the reader care about what happens to her? I certainly didn’t. Then came the convenient plot twist (spoiler) about suppressed memories and art imitating life. At that point, I just wanted the book to end so I could read something better. I gave this an extra star for the decent writing at the end, but I might just have been grateful that it was the end. Don’t bother!
This book was first a welcome change of pace and read for me, and then slowly turned into a disappointment. Book club read for me that I didn't pick personally but I was excited that is was written by Sara Shepard (even though I’ve never read or watched "Pretty Little Liars", it’s so popular so I figured that must be a good sign) and the naming of books like "Before I Go to Sleep" and "The Woman in Cabin 10" in the previews for the book got me really excited to read it as well (LOVED both of those books!) but this book’s mystery was nowhere near as good as those two novels. I liked how the book started it’s takes place in modern time and starts with a big mystery right off that bat and a main character who is a little bit kookie but interesting all at the same time. The story alternates back and forth between replaying current events and reading chapters of Eliza’s novel. As the story progresses the plot of the “fictional novel” appears to be more and more similar to the mystery going on in Eliza’s real life, and you have to try and keep up of what is real, what is fake, and what actually happened to Eliza in real life. Honestly, the mystery felt drawn out and not all that enticing to me overall. The characters fell kind of flat in the book and while they were amicable, I just was never excited to pick this book up and wonder OH MY GOSH WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT. It was more like, ok, when will you FINALLY iron out all the details of this mystery so the book can end and I can move onto my next one. Bah. Not a terrible book and the general idea of having the connection between the novel & Eliza’s real life was and interesting set up for the book, but in no way should it be making all these lists for “10 of the most anticipated books out in 2018 and everything else the online reviews are claiming.
This is the first time I have ever taken time to write a review for a book. I guess I should have known better when I figured out the author of this book was the same as the one for pretty little liars. I dumped that after a couple seasons as I got tired of the way the author seemed heck bent on twisting the story with no end in sight. I will not go to deeply into this author’s attempt at a book for an adult as I don’t want to create a spoiler alert but I can tell you this much. I am starting to develop a headache from this book and plan not to finish it (also never happens) and I am developing beliefs that I might have a brain tumor like the main character believes about herself AND the main character of her own book. So I have had enough. I do not think I will even donate this to the library because although I do COMPLETELY love a good psychological thriller, this, much like Pretty Little Liars is not one.
